The Bastille Day Event is one of the most dramatic magnetic storm events in recent history. During the event, the interplanetary magnetic field exhibited extreme north- and southward excursions combined with interplanetary shocks. The latter led to very strong magnetospheric compressions. As a result, strong electric fields were produced inside the magnetosphere, which had a profound impact also on the dynamics of the inner magnetosphere. In particular, strong changes of the ring current resulted from heating and acceleration of magnetospheric plasma. Therefore, the event presents an ideal test case for models designed to describe ring current dynamics. We present results from a simulation combining a global magnetospheric model (BATSRUS) with a ring current gyrokinetic model. The MHD model provides input to the ring current model through the ionospheric potential and the magnetic field. Plasma parameters are also provided as input. We discuss the results from these calculations, and compare to spacecraft observations.
