We present a new category of dayside auroral transients using global auroral image data acquired from the Polar ultraviolet imager at N2 Lyman-Birge-Hopfield emission bands. The dayside auroral transients are characterized by a sudden brightening of aurora in the midday sub- auroral zone, and thus named midday low-latitude auroral transients (MLAT). MLAT were found to occur during the passage of interplanetary shocks at the Earth's magnetopause, as identified by Wind spacecraft in the solar wind and by the onset of storm sudden commencements (SSC) on the ground. The sudden brightening of the midday low-latitude auroral transients occurred simultaneously with the onset of SSC and lasted for ~6 min. The occurrence rate of the MLAT is low. We have examined 24 interplanetary shock events during the 1996- 1999 period and only found 3 such rapid auroral brightenings in the midday sub-auroral zone. Therefore, shock compression is not a sufficient condition for the production of MLAT. We will examine solar wind conditions that favor the MLAT generation and discuss possible physical mechanisms driving the solar wind-magnetosphere-ionosphere coupling.
