We present observations of up-flowing oxygen beams in the southern polar region obtained by the CIS experiment onboard Cluster. We concentrate on 04 March 2001, a day with moderate geomagnetic activity (Kp=4+). During 21:30-23:00 UT the CLUSTER spacecraft crossed the south polar cusp and entered the magnetosphere at an altitude of 9-7.5 RE. In the cusp region we observe up-flowing oxygen beams in the energy range ~300 eV - 1 keV, with peak energies decreasing within the magnetosphere to ~ 70 eV. At the same time, up-flowing H+ is observed, however, much less pronounced. Using data from spacecraft 1, 3, and 4, we investigate time- and spatial variations of the up-flowing ions and discuss possible sources and acceleration processes.
