Chandra Proposal Id #02600189

Scientific paper

We propose Chandra observations of the nearby spiral galaxy NGC 2403. Deep HI observations have revealed numerous expanding superbubbles in the disk and an extensive HI halo with large and peculiar kinematics. The HI halo may be due to a large galactic fountain powered by the vertical expansion of superbubbles. The aims of this proposal are i) the study of X-ray emission from the superbubbles and ii) the search for a hot diffuse emission from the halo. In particular, the presence or absence of a hot counterpart of the HI halo will contribute new crucial information for understanding the evolution of NGC 2403 in particular and similar galaxies in general.
