The AXAF LETG is sensitive to the range of energy of supersoft X-ray sources (SSS), some of the most puzzling low-mass X-ray binaries ever discovered. We propose to exploit the unique spectral capabilities of the LETG to study in detail two of the most intriguing SSS, Cal 83 (50 ksec) and Cal 87 (100 ksec). SSSs probably involve very hot white dwarfs within a binary system, burning accreted hydrogen in a shell on their surface. We propose to get detailed high spectral-resolution, high signal-to-noise spectra which will allow to distinguish between white dwarf (due to characteristic absorption edges) and neutron star models (smooth black body spectrum), and to search for clues for the differences between these two objects.
