We consider two questions: Does the AL index provide evidence for a special steady convection state of the magnetosphere? If so, what solar wind conditions lead to this special steady state? We define a set of conditions that describe short intervals of steady convection in AL. We demonstrate that longer intervals are not consistent with the simple conjunction of short intervals, indicating a special state of prolonged steady convection. Then, using a superposed epoch analysis, we identify the necessary conditions in IMF Bz and other interplanetary parameters that produce prolonged intervals of steady convection.
