Both simple event and statistical studies have clearly demonstrated that the size of the polar cap varies in response to changes in the solar wind interplanetary magnetic field (IMF). Generally, a southward IMF shift results in an increase in the amount of open flux in the polar cap during the substorm growth and often in early expansion phases, and a reduction of open flux at some point during the expansion phase. However, the changes in the polar cap can be very complicated and the boundaries between open and closed flux regions are not always clearly demarcated by the auroral luminosity. This study examines an isolated substorm event by using solar wind monitoring spacecraft input to run a global MHD simulation of the magnetosphere. We construct time series of the potential across the polar cap, the open flux in the polar cap, the total auroral precipitation power, the ionospheric Joule heating, and the energy stored in the tail and its time rate of change in the MHD simulation. We compare these results to those from the Polar spacecraft to gain a better understanding of the effect of the IMF on the dynamics of the polar cap and auroral magnetosphere.
