The recent discovery of an optical pulsar, and the confirmation of early observations of a second bright source in the remnant of SN 1987A give some new experimental information to check the stellar collapse from which this supernova originated. Here we further discuss the hypothesis of a collapse in two stages (due to the fragmentation into two pieces of a massive, fast rotating core during the collapse) which we have previously suggested in order to explain the two neutrino bursts detected in Mont Blanc, Kamiokande, IMB and Baksan underground experiments at the time of the explosion.
The possibility that the collapse of the massive core has produced two collapsed objects, namely an ultra dense star and a neutron star in a binary system, is discussed. It is shown that this hypothesis is consistent with the preliminary observations of the pulsar, assuming conservation of the presupernova angular momentum.
