The Rice Convection Model (RCM) is a computer code for simulating the inner magnetosphere and its coupling to the ionosphere. We have used the RCM to investigate the distribution of electric field in the sub-auroral ionosphere during the magnetic storm of October 19, 1998, with particular emphasis on the formation and persistence of Subauroral Ion Drift (SAID) events. SAID events are latitudinally narrow regions of rapid westward drift located just equatorward of the auroral zone in the pre-midnight local time sector. Within the RCM, SAID-like features generally appear as a consequence of plasma-sheet protons penetrating closer to the Earth in the pre-midnight sector than plasma-sheet electron. In order to investigate the details of SAID formation during this storm, we have: (1) used a latitudinal grid spacing of less than 0.4 degree throughout the sub-auroral region; (2) specified auroral conductance using model-computed plasma-sheet electron distributions; and (3) represented the magnetospheric magnetic field using a series of Hilmer magnetic field models driven by solar wind ram pressure, Dst, and ABI (the latitudinal location of the low-latitude edge of auroral electron precipitation at midnight). Results of the simulation and their implication for SAID formation and persistence will be discussed.
