The transformation of lonsdaleite into graphite was studied in order to establish the mechanism of the crystal lattice restructuring during the transformation. Specimens consisting mostly of lonsdaleite were selected after phase and structural analysis by the electron microdiffraction technique. The transformation was obtained by heating a specimen by a powerful electron beam in the column of the microscope. Under these conditions, the lonsdaleite transformed into graphite almost instantly, while any diamond present transformed only to a very small extent. The martensitic character of the lonsdaleite-graphite transformation was established along with the crystallographic reversibility of the reciprocal transformation of lonsdaleite and graphite.
