Significant variations in the H-alpha line profile of T Tauri were detected on 14 spectra obtained at time intervals of 6 to 7 min. These observations show that spectra obtained hitherto for T Tauri by classical methods with long exposure times were average spectra. The radial velocities corresponding to different emission and absorption components were measured and found not to vary significantly from one spectrum to another. The extraordinarily rapid variations observed cannot be explained by current theories of gravitational contraction. The chromospheric ray cannot be produced in the whole of the chromosphere of the star, but rather in a region of small extent.
