This talk will describe some of the interesting challenges in aeronomy that remain to be solved by ground-based optical observers. The emphasis will be on poorly understood processes occurring in the high-latitude thermosphere. Topics to be discussed will include imaging thermospheric features at small spatial scales, mapping the thermospheric vertical wind field, exploring the E-region between 120- and 180-km altitude, and extending the ground-based optical measurements into times of full daylight. The challenging aspects of these problems will be discussed, along with possible strategies for progress in each area. Where progress through ground-based observations does not seem likely, space-based alternatives will be examined.
