Upper-atmospheric gravity waves generating traveling ionospheric disturbances have been observed for several decades. Medium-scale gravity waves (MSGWs) undulating the bottom side of the ionosphere can be observed in the HF radar ground scatter due to focusing/defocusing of the HF signal. While MSGWs can derive energy from various sources in the upper and lower atmosphere the majority of the high-latitude MSGWs appear to be generated by ionospheric mechanisms (Joule heating or Lorentz force) in the auroral electrojets. Downward propagating MSGWs can reach the troposphere and reflect from the ground. Earth-reflected MSGWs have been observed by HF radars (Samson et al., 1990). It is shown that MSGWs can modulate tropospheric clouds, precipitation and can even power tropospheric storms. Ionospheric sources of atmospheric gravity waves may be important in the energy budget of the entire atmosphere including the troposphere. Samson et al., J. Geophys. Res., 95, 7693-7709, 1990.
