Our ability to model the Earth's upper atmosphere and ionosphere has developed rapidly during the past decade spurred in part by advances in computers and numerical techniques and in part by the challenge of modeling the high quality observational data obtained in the CEDAR program. In this celebration of the CEDAR program, a review of some of the progress made in modeling the properties of the global upper atmosphere and ionosphere will be given as well as a discussion of areas where improvements are needed. The CEDAR program has been an excellent format to develop not only our observing capabilities but also our numerical simulations and theoretical understanding of atmospheric and ionospheric processes operating in the upper atmosphere and their response to solar and auroral variability. A projection of modeling advances needed for future improvements in numerically simulating the upper atmosphere and ionosphere will be presented.
