Observed decreases and increases of the geomagnetic field corresponding to crotchet effects are explained as being produced by the effects of the solar flare on the normal eastward currents over the equator and on the westward counter electrojet current. A graph is presented which shows the crotchet effect at Indian stations along with diurnal variations of the geomagnetic field.
