The height variation of the effective lifetimes of the 1S state of O and (B2 Sigma u(+), v = 0) level of N2(+) in the atmosphere are calculated. For the excited N2(+) ions, the half-quenching height is found at about 48 km, giving the possibility of observing N2(+) first-negative-band emissions below 50 km in relativistic particle events. The half-quenching height of the O(1S) atoms is found to vary between 85 and 115 km, depending on different values of the quenching-rate coefficients and model atmospheres. Quenching, therefore, has a different effect on the height profiles of the 4278-A and 5577-A emissions when auroral particles penetrate into and below the E-region.
