Several relations among elastic properties, density, and mean atomic weight are examined on the basis of experimental data now available for oxides and silicates. Although the relations of Birch (Vp = a+bρ), O. Anderson-Nafe (ln K = A ln 2m/ρ+C), and D. Anderson (ρ = AmΦn) are useful for the geophysical interpretation of the Earth and other planets, there are many exceptions and none of the relations appears to have general validity.
