The rate of formation of organic carbon has been calculated with the aid of a chemical model. It has been shown, assuming vertical velocities in convection cells which were measured in hydrographic studies off the East African Coast, that the formation of maximum concentrations of organic carbon is dependent on the direction as well as the rate of vertical motion. For this reason, the maximum carbon content is not always found in the divergence zones but, rather, in the high vertical velocities of the convergence zones.
