It is shown that the LF variability of the quasar 3C 345 is determined by changes in the absorption of the ionized medium surrounding the nucleus. The degree of the medium's ionization varies as a function of the UV emission level. The recombination time of the medium corresponds to the typical time of the LF variability. The brightness temperature of the compact component is approximately equal to or less than 10 exp 12 K, and the size (the visible part of the jet closest to the nucleus) depends on the transparency of the ambient medium.
