It is pointed out that the reversal sequence of the earth's magnetic field contains information about core processes and changes in conditions at the core boundary. On the basis of previous analyses, it has been concluded that over the past 86 Ma the normal polarity state has exhibited a higher stability than the reverse polarity state. However, according to the dynamo theory, a difference in the stability of the two polarity states is not expected. The present analysis has the objective to investigate the relative stabilities of the two polarity states, to estimate the actual rate of reversals, to determine the gross structure of nonstationarities in the data, and to interpret the results in terms of core processes and changes in the boundary conditions. Very strong evidence is found of long-term changes of the order of 100 Ma in the mean lengths of normal and reverse polarity intervals. There is no good evidence for any differences in the statistical properties of the normal and reverse polarity sequences, nor in particular for differences in the relative stabilities of the two polarity states.
