Wave normal directions of magnetospheric chorus observed at the magnetic equator have been determined using data from the geosynchronous GEOS 2 satellite located at L = 6.6. The analyses were carried out for both the upper and the lower band chorus using a newly developed method in which maximum likelihood estimation is applied to the observed spectral matrices. The data base used for the direction findings is discussed, and the method of direction finding to determine the wave normal directions is presented. The characteristics of the observed emissions are described, the direction finding results are presented, and the generation mechanism of the chorus is discussed.
