A spectroscopic data base has been used together with an appropriate forward model to build synthetic transmission spectra of the Earth atmosphere around 589.5 nm. The aim is the modeling of the telluric H2O absorption lines imprinted in the astronomical spectra recorded at different altitudes. After convolution of these theoretical spectra by the relevant spectrometer instrumental function, and adjustment of the H2O content, the division of the recorded spectrum by the calculated transmission removes the telluric lines, making clearer the other features. Results of such a procedure are shown in the case of high resolution spectra (R = 110000), in a 1.5 nm interval region around the sodium doublet for two different sites. An extreme case is shown, where the detection of a small interstellar line (0.5 - 10-14 nm equivalent width) has been possible with the Aurélie spectrometer of the Observatoire de Haute-Provence (France), in spite of its location on the flanks of H2O lines which are 20 times stronger. The adequacy of the method, which in principle can be extended to any wavelength range and relevant molecules, is discussed depending on the type of the observations. These spectra can also be simply used for visual comparisons pr to calculate in advance the optimum date of observation of a particular feature.
