The exterior metric of the van Stockum solution of Einstein's gravitational equations may be classified according to the mass per unit length of the interior. Examination of the exterior spacetime shows that null geodesics may extend from the source to infinity in both lower-mass classes. However, in the highest-mass class, the discovery that all null geodesics are radially confined has possible relevance to astrophysical observations. The expression for the maximum attainable radial coordinate is remarkably simple.
