In preparation for a PNC measurement using a single, trapped Ba^+ ion(Phys. Rev. Lett. 70), 2383 (1993), we have used the apparatus previously described(Bull. Am. Phys. Soc. 42), 981 (1997) to complete additional preliminary work including precise measurements of the following quantities: spin-state lifetimes in the 5D_3/2 and 5D_5/2 excited states and in the 6S_1/2 ground state, lifetimes of the 5D_3/2 and 5D_5/2 metastable states, and branching ratios from the 6P_3/2 excited state. We will report on the progress and related measurements of the 2-μm laser used to drive quadrupole transitions from the 6S_1/2 ground state to the 5D_3/2 excited state and to induce light shifts in the sublevels of these states. We also present measurements of rf spin resonances between the ground-state magnetic sublevels; ultimately we will use this or an equivalent technique to measure Ba^+ PNC.
