X-ray emission seems to be the single most reliable indicator of activity in galactic nuclei. Rapid variability and simple physical arguments suggest that the X-ray emission arises in the very inner regions of active galactic nuclei (AGNs), and X-rays thus provide a probe of the immediate environment of the supermassive black holes that are thought to be the ultimate power source in AGNs. We will review the basic characteristics of X-ray emission from AGNs, and discuss how AGN physics is studied through time-resolved observations of variability in different type of AGNs.
