A modern low-power digital ionosonde was easily adapted to meteor observations. To achieve usable meteor rates it was necessary to improve performance, mainly by significantly increasing the pulse repetition frequency and using coherent averaging. Measurements were made at 9.3 MHz. Our maximum hourly meteor rates were /~35 in early morning, the majority of the echoes being of the overdense//underdense transitional type. The height distribution of the meteors maximized at 93km, and the typical echo was seen at a zenith angle of /30° towards north. Diffusion coefficients and winds were measured.
