Consideration is given to current conceptions of the distribution of matter in the universe, based on observations of galactic distributions. The results of surveys of the apparent distribution of galaxies on the sky and of the true spatial distributions of stars in the Coma, Perseus and Hercules clusters are discussed, and evidence supporting the existence of superclusters of galaxies including these clusters is presented. The peculiar motions of superclusters are examined, and the evolution of the present universe, with its superclusters and tremendous voids separating them, from the homogeneous universe indicated by the cosmic microwave background is considered.
