Effects of interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) sector structures, such as 'toward' or 'away' from the sun, on the polar cap geomagnetic fields have been fairly well established due to studies by several scientists during the past decade. Various types of IMF sector behavior are examined by taking the seasonal factor into account. After a brief introduction of the production mechanism of sector effects on polar geomagnetic fields, the limitations and merits of IMF sector inference from geomagnetic data are stressed.
