Milagro will be the first water-Čerenkov detector specifically built to study extensive air showers. The high sensitivity of Milagro will permit the detection of lower energy air showers than with any previous ground-based array. In addition to its lower energy threshold, the detector will have excellent angular resolution because it measures the arrival time of a larger fraction of incident particles than conventional detectors. The first stage of Milagro, called Milagrito, is now being built. This talk will present the status of the detector construction and its capabilities for detecting astrophysical phenomena, including the ability to estimate the distance to gamma-ray bursts, and the observation of particle acceleration on the sun.
