It has become increasingly well established that the bulk of the matter in the Universe is dark and not shining in visible radiation. Furthermore, it is now clear that the majority of this dark matter is not made out of neutrons and protons. This talk will review the arguments for the dark mater with an emphasis on the role of the recent observations of graviational micro-lensing events in the halo of the Galaxy and on the new extragalactic deuterium implications for the cosmic baryon density. Discussion of controversies and implications of the age of the universe will also be made. It will be shown that the non-baryonic dark matter implies physics beyond the standard model of particle physics.
