In exploding white dwarfs (Type Ia supernovae), a nuclear flame propagates at a subsonic speed. The flame speed is a crucial model parameter and depends on the development of flame instabilities. We study microscopic instabilities of flames with a self-consistent linear stability analysis. In the dispersion relations thus obtained, the fastest branch can be interpreted as a thermal instability due to the strong temperature dependence of nuclear reaction rates. This instability grows faster than the hydrodynamic instabilities (e.g., Rayleigh-Taylor instabilities). The implications on the flame propagation are also discussed.
