A correlation between the deflection of light at the edge of the solar disk observed during eclipses and variations in coronal ellipticity is investigated. The occurrence of sunspots is found to correlate at a 0.63 level with the deflections, based on observations of sunspots over the past century. Coronal ellipticity, varying as a function of filament magnitude, latitudinal distribution of the filaments, and coronal luminosity, reaches a maximum at two solar radii and is used to determine the a + b coefficients during variations in solar activity. The deflections are then compared to the concurrent a + b values, and a correlation coefficient results which has a value between 0.64-0.99. Further observations are recommended in order to identify the causes of the deflections.
