A description of the characteristics and location of a solar flare observed on Feb. 26, 1981 is presented, along with the results of an attempt to duplicate the color of the flare. The white light event lasted nearly two minutes and displayed a pink edge overlying the umbra. Reproduction of the color was found to be possible by using a red light at 6300 A diluted with white light. The color was also producible with an Hα 65 A dielectric filter over an emission width of 140 A. The source of the possible line broadening is discussed in terms of the Stark effect, which is concluded to indicate deep chromospheric penetration on a scale never previously observed.
