The Viking project was designed to provide material for a detailed study of the properties of particle plasma, with the emphasis placed on the obtaining data on the difficult-to-measure electric field, and on the choice of orbit which covered the most important active plasma regions. Special consideration was given to the real-time presentation of the results, which made it possible to plan observations to be made during the following minutes. The results of the Viking particle plasma measurements are important as a basis for drawing the circuit of energy transfer from the solar wind to the magnetosphere and ionosphere and for understanding the general properties of collisionless plasmas in space.
