Scientific paper

The literature on geomagnetic-field inversions from 1957 to 1983 is
surveyed. Particular consideration is given to the inversion occurrence
time and field strength, the distribution of virtual geomagnetic poles,
and secular variations during inversions. Based on this review, a scheme
for the development of inversions is proposed.
