An examination of several recent papers dealing with amplitude and phase spectra of atmospherics shows that the problems involved have not always been correctly formulated. One difficulty in the measurement of phase spectra is the selection of the precise time to which waveforms of atmospherics should be referred. Spectra of radiation fields near idealised forms of lightning discharge have been re-calculated and differences between the results and those previously published are discussed.
