A complex variable pulse structure in Hercules X-1 can imply a configuration more complex than the pure dipole configuration of the magnetic field near the neutron star surface. It is shown that within the framework of an ideal approximation of a pure dipole aligned with quadrupole components, the X-ray pulse in this source can be formed both near the polar caps with different magnetic field strength and in a ringshaped zone around the magnetic pole with a weaker field.
