Growth rates for whistler mode waves and electrostatic waves in the presence of an electron beam are computed for various magnetospheric parameters, and one-dimensional electromagnetic simulations are performed based on a linear analysis. The diffusion process is studied for an electron beam through the electrostatic and whistler instabilities. The growth rate for the electrostatic instability is found to be always larger than that of the whistler mode instability. A monoenergetic beam provides little energy to whistler mode waves as a result of competition with faster growing electrostatic waves. Whistler mode waves are excited in spite of the small growth rates and the coexisting quasi-linear electrostatic diffusion process. The diffusion of the warm electron beam is explained by three different processes with different time scales.
