Hourly ionospheric data of low/middle latitude stations in India and the meridional neutral wind data of Kuhlungsborn and Obninsk (54 deg 01 N, 55 N respectively) were taken to investigate the effect of winds on the latitudinal variation of nighttime F-layer vertical movements. Results show that the electrodynamic drifts control the nighttime F-layer vertical movements at near-equatorial latitudes. The latitudinal variation noticed in the vertical movements at low and high-midlatitude stations could be due to the latitudinal variation in the magnitude and the time of occurrence of direction reversal of meridional neutral winds. The observed diurnal and seasonal behavior of F-layer vertical movements supports this.
