The ultraviolet imager on the Viking satellite provided global image sequences of the aurora in dayside and nightside hemispheres with high spatial and temporal resolution. Onset and development of auroral substorms and the occurrence of small scale auroral brightenings were observed in the context of the global auroral distribution. Examples of substorm behavior which show multiple intensifications existing in the auroral distribution as well as the dominance of poleward and eastward evolution of substorms in contrast to westward motion are presented.
