Preliminary results are presented from the electric field instrument on the Swedish satellite Viking. The measurements cover altitudes up to 13,500 km. In nonauroral regions the electric field has the general character expected from extrapolation along magnetic field lines of previously known low-altitude electric field distributions. A pronounced feature of the data is the prevalence of strong localized and highly structured electric fields above the auroral oval. The border between such fields and the quiet electric fields equatorward of the oval can be extremely sharp. The electric fields are usually transverse to the magnetic field, but preliminary analysis indicates cases of magnetic-field aligned components. A variety of ULF waves are found in the electric field data. Because of the generally high Alfven velocity in the upper parts of the Viking orbit, the electric fields of ULF waves are easily measured even where their magnetic fields are below detectability.
