The stability of a self-gravitating stellar system is considered in comparison to electron oscillations in a plasma. The allowed collective modes of collisionless and hydrodynamical systems are compared in order to clarify the differences between the collisionless (Vlasov) and hydrodynamical descriptions. Growth rates and the density wave model of spiral arms are discussed.
