Scientific paper

The aim of this paper is to attract the attention of astronomers, particularly solar physicists, to the possibility of using spectral observations of the sun and stars to study global changes of the content of the earth's atmosphere and its other properties. Such a possibility is demonstrated by using solar spectral observations near Moscow as an example. By comparing the equivalent widths of O2 629.5 nm and CO2 2070.0 nm lines, recorded with a vertical solar telescope in 1969 and 1991, it is concluded that the content of oxygen in the earth's atmosphere has not changed (to within +/- 5 percent) during the last two decades. During the same period, the content of carbon dioxide has increased by 48 percent.
