The 190 to 250 nm nightglow spectrum of Venus recorded by the Pioneer Venus Orbiter is reanalyzed. The summed spectra, taken over many orbits, have weak and previously unidentified bands in the same spectral region, which are interpreted as originating from higher vibrational levels of NO(A 2Sigma(+)), resulting from collisional relaxation of NO(C 2Pi)v = 0. The intensity of the airglow is variable, with the average number of photon counts in a spectral scan being 3 and the maximum counts being 65. The scans were divided into a high-count and the low-count groups. The resulting partial-sum spectra, together with the wide intensity variability, suggest the existence of at least two excitation mechanisms, with the low-count spectrum (which looks similar to an N + O afterglow spectrum containing relaxed NO states) being generated at low altitude, and the high-count spectrum (which resembles a photoexcitation spectrum of the C 2Pi(v = 0)) reflecting N + O recombination at higher altitudes.
