Some implications of the relationship between magnetospheric and ionospheric convection and the development of substorms are examined. In particular, attention is given to four different events that deal with different aspects of convection development. These are (1) immediate auroral effects after the IMF Bz southward turning, (2) global scale development of an isolated auroral substorm after IMF being northward for many hours and then turning suddenly southward, (3) convection change due to a discontinuity in the solar wind pressure, and (4) a stationary magnetospheric convection event. The importance of the ionospheric conductivities in the substorm sequence is demonstrated, and three different response times are identified in the magnetospheric response to convection changes. Changes in the magnetotail configuration are shown to be necessary to start a substorm. Different precipitation mechanisms are shown to be active in the various types of magnetospheric response mechanisms.
