Steve Ostro's contributions to asteroid science extended well beyond his radar observations and modeling of these bodies. Among other things, he understood the important implications that asteroid shapes and spin states have for the geophysics of these bodies, and initiated research to explore and use radar-derived asteroid shapes for understanding the nature and mechanics of asteroids. This talk will discuss the evolution and importance of these studies, built around the existence of detailed asteroid shapes and spin states, for our current and evolving understanding of asteroids.
