It is suggested that these phenomena which cause a temporary redistribution of ionization are predominantly solar tidal oscillations in the atmosphere which are influenced by lunar tides. Although the evidence only shows the periodicity interval as being between 6 and 8 hr, the former seems more probable. Some disturbances are also associated with increased magnetic activity.
