A novel method is presented for extraction of a signal from low S/N data, on the basis of a wavelet transform. The method, which incorporates a crude pattern-recognition algorithm in the space-scale plane, derives quantitative information on the magnitude of the detected structures. An illustrative application of the method is given for the Encke gap ringlet in Saturn's rings; its detailed shape contains at least two peaks.
