A detailed study is conducted of the mechanism whereby dust-belt formation proceeds around a satellite as it is bombarded by micrometeoroids, throwing excavated particles into planocentric trajectories close to the satellite orbit. A general dust-torus model is applied to the case of Phobos, in view of its importance to prospective Martian missions. By means of semianalytical evaluations conducted on this basis, it is concluded that the total mass of the Phobos dust belt is several tens of thousands of kg; the particle lifetime inside the torus is about 1 year.
