Spectroscopic analyses show that Fe(3+)-doped smectites prepared in the laboratory exhibit important similarities to the soils on Mars. Smectite clays readily incorporate water-soluble ions and chemical complexes, such as aqueous Fe(III), into their interlaminar regions and are able to serve as a template for chemical reactions in the interlayer regions (MacEwan and Wilson, 1980). Clay silicates are therefore highly sensitive to their chemical environment, and clay silicates on Mars should reflect the Martian environment in their interlayer regions. Interlayer expansion physically allows production of nanophase products, but the clay structure restricts long-range order. The experiments presented in this study are intended to elucidate further the nature of this nanophase ferric material formed in smectites that has visible reflectance properties related to Mars. The smectites examined are intended to resemble smectites which may have formed in an environment containing abundant aluminum and ferric iron. In order to identify specific ferric minerals in the clay interlayer region, Moessbauer spectra at 4.2 K and optical spectra in the extended visible range were performed.
